Keyboard shortcuts and editor commands

Every keyboard shortcut in Trace.Space, the characters that open menus inside the editor, and how the sidebars behave.

Written by Matthew Maclaine

Trace.Space works mostly with the mouse, but a small set of keys and typed characters speeds up the things you do most: opening search, accepting AI text, moving through a table, selecting cells in the matrix, and adding images, tables, diagrams, mentions and parameters while you type.

On a Mac, use Cmd where the tables say Cmd/Ctrl. On Windows and Linux, use Ctrl.

Keyboard shortcuts

Keys

Where

What it does

Cmd/Ctrl+K

Anywhere, when no text field is focused

Opens item search with the cursor in the search box. See Searching.

Cmd/Ctrl+Enter

Editor, while AI-generated text is waiting for approval

Accepts the generated text. The bin button next to it discards it.

Cmd/Ctrl+Z, Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+Z

Any text field

Undo and redo your own edits, also while colleagues edit the same item.

Cmd/Ctrl+B, Cmd/Ctrl+I, Cmd/Ctrl+U

Editor

Bold, italic, underline.

Tab, Shift+Tab

Inside a table in the editor

Moves to the next or previous cell.

Enter

A number attribute

Saves the value.

Enter, Shift+Enter

AI chat box

Enter sends the message, Shift+Enter adds a line break.

Escape

Traceability matrix

Clears the selected cells. Clicking outside the grid does the same.

Cmd/Ctrl+click

Traceability matrix

Adds a cell to the selection or removes it, so you can act on several cells at once.

Shift+click

Traceability matrix

Selects the rectangle between the last clicked cell and this one.

Cmd/Ctrl+click, or right-click and choose Open in new tab

A traced item in the Traced to tab, or a search result

Opens the item in a new browser tab. These are ordinary links, so the browser's own shortcuts apply.

Up, Down, Enter

Any suggestion popover in the editor

Moves through the list and picks the highlighted entry.

Trigger characters in the editor

Typing one of these characters in an item's text opens a menu at the cursor. Keep typing to filter the list, then press Enter or click an entry. Press Escape or click elsewhere to close the menu and keep the character as plain text.

Type

What opens

/

The command menu: Upload image, Upload video, Add table (3×3), Add Mermaid diagram, Link a parameter, Generate with AI.

@

An item search. Pick an item to insert a mention that links to it and shows its current title. In a comment, @ searches people instead and notifies the person you pick. See Commenting.

$

A parameter search. Pick a parameter to insert its live value. See Parameters.

A pasted item link

Pasting the address of a Trace.Space item turns it into an item mention. Pasting while text is selected turns the selection into a link instead.

The / command menu open in the editor

In the AI chat, typing / at the start of the box opens a list of suggested prompts to start from, and @ adds an item to the chat's context. See Working with AI.

Workspace layout

  • Resizing the sidebars. Drag the inner edge of the left sidebar or of the right sidebar (item details or AI chat) to change its width. Trace.Space remembers both widths in your browser, so they are the same the next time you open the app on that computer.

  • Full-width AI chat. The maximize icon in the Space Agent header stretches the chat across the whole window, which helps when reading long answers or tables. Click the minimize icon to return to the sidebar.
