Every text attribute of an item uses the same rich text editor. This page is the complete list of what it can do, in the order you meet it. For a guided introduction, read the editor section of Creating and editing items first.
An empty attribute shows the hint Press "/" for options. Changes save as you type and every change becomes a new version of the item.
The floating toolbar
Select text to show the toolbar. From left to right:
Button | What it does |
Bold, Italic, Underline | Toggle the mark on the selection. |
Bulleted list | Turns the current paragraphs into a bulleted list, or back. |
Clear formatting (scissors) | Removes bold, italic and underline from the selection. |
Link | Opens a box to type a URL for the selection. See Links. |
Edit with AI | Asks the AI to rewrite the selection. See AI in the editor. |
Comment | Starts a comment thread anchored to the selection. |
On a heading attribute only Edit with AI and Comment are offered. When you can comment on an item but not edit it, only Comment appears. Edit with AI is only offered where AI editing is available for the item.
Typing shortcuts
These are the shortcuts inside the editor; for the application-wide ones see Keyboard shortcuts and editor commands.
Numbered list: type
1.at the start of a line.Bulleted list: use the toolbar button.
Inline code: wrap text in backticks, as in
`RS-485`.Bold, italic, underline: Cmd+B, Cmd+I, Cmd+U on Mac, Ctrl on other systems.
Undo and redo: Cmd+Z and Cmd+Shift+Z on Mac, Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y elsewhere. Undo only steps back through your own edits, never through a colleague's.
Tab in a table moves to the next cell.
The "/" command menu
Type / in a text attribute to open the command menu. Keep typing to filter it, move with the arrow keys and press Enter, or click an entry. Press Escape to close it and keep the slash as text.
Command | What it does |
Upload image | Opens a file dialog and inserts the image at the cursor. |
Upload video | Same for a video file. |
Add table (3x3) | Inserts a table with three rows and three columns. |
Add Mermaid diagram | Inserts a diagram with a starter flowchart you can edit. |
Link a parameter | Starts a parameter search, the same as typing $. |
Generate with AI | Writes the attribute's content for you. Disabled, with a tooltip saying why, on attributes whose item type does not allow AI generation. |
The menu is not available on heading attributes.
"@" item mentions
Type @ and start typing to search items by ID or title. The first five matches are listed with a link to show more. Press Enter or click to insert a mention: a chip with the item's type icon and title that stays up to date if the item is renamed. Hover the chip to preview the item, click it to open the item in single item view in a new tab. The item you are editing is left out of the search.
Pasting the URL of a Trace.Space item also creates a mention.
"$" parameter references
Type $ to search the organization's parameters and insert one as a live reference. If nothing matches, fill in Name, Value and Unit to create a new parameter on the spot. The reference shows the parameter name with a parameter icon. A dot appears on it when the value has changed since it was inserted, and it turns gray if the parameter was deleted. See Parameters.
When Parameter suggestions is on in the view settings, numbers with units in your text are highlighted with an offer to turn them into parameters.
Links
Paste a URL on its own and it becomes a link automatically.
Select text and paste a URL to turn the selection into a link.
Select text and click Link in the toolbar to type the URL by hand. Press Enter to apply; an invalid URL is refused with a red outline.
Click into an existing link to open its popover, where you can open the target, change the URL, or remove the link with the bin button.
Links open in a new tab.
Tables
Insert a table with / > Add table (3x3). Click into a cell to show two buttons beside the table: + offers Add column before, Add column after, Add row before and Add row after; the bin offers Delete column, Delete row and Delete table. Drag a column border to resize it. Tab moves to the next cell.
Images
Insert an image with / > Upload image, by pasting it, or by dragging a file into the editor. The image is uploaded and stored with the item. Click an image to place the cursor after it. Double-click it for a full-screen preview where you can zoom and pan; press Escape or click outside to close.
Video
Insert a video with / > Upload video, by pasting or by dragging. While it uploads the editor shows Loading video. The video plays with the browser's own controls. Hover it and drag the handle on either side to resize it, down to a minimum width. Drag the video to move it within the editor or into another text attribute. The item details sidebar shows a count of videos in the item.
Mermaid diagrams
/ > Add Mermaid diagram inserts a diagram rendered from Mermaid code, starting from a small flowchart. Hover the diagram and click Edit to open the Mermaid diagram code panel. It validates the code as you type, shows the syntax error if there is one, and links to the syntax guide. Save changes is disabled until the code is valid. Double-click a diagram for a full-screen preview.
If a diagram cannot be rendered, the editor shows Mermaid Error with the message and the raw code so you can fix it. You can also ask the AI in chat to draft a diagram for you.
Comments and annotations
Select text and click Comment to open a comment box anchored to the selection. Type @ in the box to mention a colleague. Posting creates a thread that is highlighted in the text and listed in the Comments tab of the item details sidebar. Click a highlight to open its thread. See Commenting.
Two other kinds of highlight can appear in the text, both controlled from the view settings gear:
Quality checks underlines passages that fail a quality check; hover for the explanation. See Quality checks.
Parameter suggestions highlights values that could become parameters.
When you compare item versions, added and removed text is shown as a colored diff in the same editor.
AI in the editor
Edit with AI: select text, click the toolbar button, type an instruction in the Prompt box and press Enter. The request goes to the AI chat in the right sidebar, which proposes the change as a diff. Nothing changes until you accept it.
Generate with AI: from the / menu, drafts the whole attribute. The draft appears in the field with accept and discard buttons; Cmd+Enter (Ctrl+Enter elsewhere) accepts it.
See Working with AI.
Working together
Several people can edit the same attribute at once. You see each colleague's cursor and selection in their own color, labeled with their name, and their typing appears as they go. A small Fetching latest... note appears above an attribute while your copy is catching up after you start typing. See Real-time collaboration.
Items that are read-only for you, deleted, or pinned in the active variant open in a read-only editor: you can select, copy and comment but not type.
